Buffon: "At Euro 2016 we are not one of the favourites"

Italian National Team captain Gianluigi Buffon has been speaking to France Football magazine ahead of Euro 2016. He was asked what he thought his country’s chances were to which he replied; “We are among the outsiders, while the favourites are Germany, France, Spain and Belgium after what they have shown in recent months. But Italy has the means and mentally to cause a surprise. I remember only two times in which we were considered one of the favourites: World Cup 2002 and European 2004 and we cannot say that they were successful tournaments”.

Asked if he thought that the Italian public had failed to get behind their country this time around he explained that; “Apart from a few idiots I feel the backing of the fans. I do not believe there is negativity surrounding the national team”. Finally, on the subject of his retirement he stated that; “I never thought I could be so fit and decisive at 38-years-old so I want to continue until I’m 40 until the World Cup in Russia which would be my sixth. I believe I can do it”.
